Press Release

The biennial festival “Human Cities, Brussels (BE) 6 until 16 May, 2010

The biennial festival “Human Cities: Celebrating public space/Human Cities: celebrate public space” will take place in Brussels from 6 until 16 May, 2010.

For the occasion of the Human Cities festival launch, Pro Materia & ISACF La Cambre have the pleasure of inviting you to the press conference on Tuesday, February 23rd at 11 am, at the Cinematek, rue Baron Horta, 9 in the centre of Brussels.

The Human Cities festival event is an extension of the international symposium "Human Cities, sustainable urban design” which was organised by Pro Materia asbl at Flagey in Brussels in May 2007. This meeting was the first part of a project: a wide-ranging multidisciplinary reflection on urban public space and its human and cultural dynamics.

Human Cities is currently a project which is supported by the “Culture 2007-2013” program of the European Commission, the region of Brussels-Capital, the city of Brussels and the Flemish and French Communities of Belgium.

The Human Cities network can count on the following partners: ISACF-La Cambre (BE), project leader, Pro Materia (BE), concept and general art direction, Lighthouse - Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City in Glasgow (UK), Politecnico of Milan (IT), the Institute for Urban Planning in Lljubljana (SI) and the expertise of Culture Lab (BE).

The festival happening in May 2010, is the apotheosis of the European project whose content is structured around two main topics. A scientific part which highlights the functions of contemporary urban space throughout the analysis of citizen ownerships’ mechanisms towards urban objects and shapes. The second part focuses on the educational and communication range in order to reach a larger public.

This event aims at emphasizing the need to promote interdisciplinary, user-friendly and participatory approaches from citizens, designers, and public authorities through a more effective management of “creative” urban public spaces.

The "Human Cities" project wishes to contribute to the improvement of the user-friendliness and practices in town design and management through a greater synergy between the many actors who contribute to shape the city, while listening to the citizen’s expectations.
